East Ullensvang Cemetery
Section 28, Norway Township
The cemetery is southeast of Thor on Virginia Avenue on the east side of
the section.
Early owners of the
original one acre of land were H. S. Helgeson (1841) and O. C. Farseth.
The First Ullensvang
Norwegian Evangelical Church was built in 1881 on the north half of the
east center drive. In plotting out the new part, the foundation of the
church was unearthed, surrounding the third row, plot 13.
Carrie Olson was an early
organizer of this church. In 1905 the church was moved across the marshy
fields to Thor, but it burned in 1941. The village of Verbeck was 1/4
mile north of the cemetery. Ole Maage has the oldest marker, dated
1801-1882. the first steel vault was used for Clifford M. Tokheim in
1919. In 1965, Mildred Lund had eight fir trees set out, evergreen
signifying Life Eternal. |
